Game Review: Frozen Synapse

July 23, 2012

My search for a decent computer game continues.

This time it was on the recommendation of Gamespot that I tried out Frozen Synapse.

Just follow the easy instructions and you’ll be having fun in no time…

Another turn-based strategy game, this time with minimalist graphics, so you’d figure that they poured all their energies into gameplay and strategy, right? The rules are complex, alright, so I was encouraged by the fact that there’s a 30 minute tutorial to show you all the possible movement options and commands you might need along the way.

Not so fast. The whole game is basically one big frustrating guessing game.

Guess what the enemy’s going to do? Nope! You’re dead! Start again.
When you guess right, you might win, when you guess wrong you’re dead and have to start over. Your guys can’t shoot worth a damn, and the enemies are sharpshooters. That figures. You’ve got shotguns, they have automatic rifles… sounds fair, right?

It’s a cheap little game, but I can’t get much satisfaction out of the kinds of sudden death games that used to be all the rage in the 80s.

You idiot! You should have pressed left. Now you’re gonna die.

My search for a good game continues. Drop me a line if you have any ideas. Maybe I’ll stay away from turn-based strategy games for a while…
